Thinking about a hair system?
From how it looks to how it fits into your everyday life, here are the things people most often want to know before taking the next step. Here are your questions answered.
The basics 7
What is a hair system?
A hair system is a non-surgical way to replace the appearance of hair loss. Hair is attached to a fine base, which is fitted to the area you want to cover and blended with your existing hair. The result is an ultra realistic look with a tailored hairline, colour, density, cut and style.
Copy linkIs a hair system the same as a wig?
Both are forms of hair replacement. A fitted hair system commonly covers a specific area of hair loss and is secured for ongoing wear. Wigs often cover more of the head and may be removed daily, although attachment methods vary. The right option depends on your hair loss, scalp and lifestyle.
Copy linkIs it real hair?
Yes, hair systems use 100% real human hair, allowing a natural range of movement, touch and styling.
Copy linkWill it look natural?
Yes, a well-selected, well-fitted system can look extremely natural. Colour matching, a believable density, the position of the hairline and a good blend all matter. The aim is a result that suits your face and age, with a haircut you feel comfortable wearing. Often better than the hair you once had.
Copy linkWill people notice?
People who know you may notice a change, especially if you move from significant hair loss to a fuller style. How much they notice depends on the change you choose, but someone meeting you for the first time will not know. A subtle density and familiar haircut can make the transition feel more comfortable. Whether you tell anyone is entirely your decision.
Copy linkWho can wear a hair system?
Anyone with thinning hair or established hair loss can wear a hair system.
Copy linkIs it surgical?
No. A hair system adds the appearance of hair without a surgical procedure. It does not regrow hair or treat the underlying cause of hair loss.

Can I choose the hairline and hairstyle?
Yes, that's the best part! You can have it look as it once was before you started losing hair, or you can choose the look of a celebrity or sports star. There are no limits.
Copy linkCan I have an exposed hairline or brushed-back style?
Yes. These styles need a suitable front construction, careful fitting and consistent hairline maintenance. We will discuss how the look you want affects your choice of system and the care involved.
Copy linkCan you match greys, curls or straightened hair?
Yes! Hair systems are available in a range of colours, grey blends, textures and densities. We will assess your hair before recommending the perfect blend.
Copy linkCan I colour or bleach the hair?
Speak with us first. System hair is already processed, and further colouring can change its condition and lifespan. Home bleach, permanent colour, perms and chemical straightening can cause irreversible damage.

What happens at my consultation?
We discuss the result you want, look at your hair and scalp, and explain suitable options. You can ask about the fitting process, ongoing care, appointments and costs. It is the time to understand the commitment as well as the look.
Copy linkCan I try a system before committing?
Ask what can be shown or demonstrated at your consultation. Samples and photos can help explain construction and possible results, but a finished system is cut and fitted for the individual.
Copy linkDo I need to shave my head?
Bonded systems commonly require the attachment area to be clipped or shaved so the base can sit securely against the scalp. This does not necessarily mean shaving your whole head, just the area of hair loss.
Copy linkDoes fitting hurt?
No, it doesn't. The feeling is of a secured nature, which is comforting but not painful.
Copy linkWhat if I have sensitive skin?
If so, please tell us before your appointment. Your attachment plan may need to be adjusted, and product compatibility testing should follow the manufacturer's directions. A clear test does not guarantee you will never react later. Active irritation, broken skin or a known adhesive allergy needs assessment before bonding. We also apply a dedicated skin and scalp protecting barrier film before fitting to ensure there is an extremely low risk of irritation.
Copy linkWill it damage my existing hair?
Careful fitting, suitable attachment and proper removal help reduce the risk of damage. Pulling, unsuitable adhesives, neglected maintenance or rough removal can damage hair or irritate skin. Your system also does not stop natural hair loss from progressing.

Can I shower and wash my hair?
Yes, once the initial bonding period for your adhesive has cured, generally 24 hours. Use the washing method and products recommended for your system. Gentle handling, thorough rinsing and careful drying help keep it looking its best.
Copy linkCan I sleep in it?
Systems fitted for continuous wear can be slept in. Reduce rubbing against your pillow, keep bedding clean and make sure the hair and base are dry before bed.
Copy linkCan I exercise and sweat?
Many wearers train regularly. Heavy sweating can affect bond performance and maintenance needs, so tell us about your routine. Wait until the initial bonding period is complete.
Copy linkCan I swim in the ocean or pool?
Swimming is fine with a suitable, fully established bond. Salt, chlorine and force from waves or diving can affect the hair and attachment. Rinse promptly afterwards and avoid swimming if the system is lifting or insecure. Wearing a surf hat is recommended when surfing.
Copy linkCan I use a sauna, steam room or spa?
Yes, you can, but high heat, moisture and sweating can shorten bond performance. Avoid them during the initial bonding period or whenever the system feels loose.
Copy linkWhat about wind, sport or wearing a helmet?
A properly maintained attachment is designed for ordinary daily activity and all weather. Contact sport, strong water pressure, tight headwear and helmet friction can put extra stress on it. Always wear required safety equipment and discuss your activities with us when choosing your system.
Copy linkCan I style it with a hairdryer or hair products?
Human hair systems can be styled with suitable products and controlled low to medium heat. Keep styling products away from the bond, use gentle tension and follow your system's heat limits. Synthetic grey hairs may have much stricter restrictions.
Copy linkCan someone touch my hair?
Normal gentle contact is fine with a secure system. The base or edges may be felt on close inspection, depending on the construction and attachment. Avoid pulling or tugging, just as you would with your own hair.
Copy linkDoes it feel hot or heavy?
Comfort varies with base construction, coverage, density and climate. Some people notice the system more during the first few days or in hot weather. Tell us if comfort is a priority so we can discuss the trade-offs between different options.
Copy linkCan I travel with it?
Yes. Plan maintenance around your trip and pack the care products you are approved to use. Check airline restrictions for liquids, aerosols, adhesives and removers, and avoid leaving products in a hot car or direct sun.
Copy linkMaintenance and lifespan 8
How often will I need maintenance?
There is no single interval that suits everyone. Your adhesive, scalp, activity level, base and hygiene needs determine your schedule. We will recommend an interval and adjust it if your attachment loosens sooner. Do not keep wearing an insecure or uncomfortable system just to reach your next booking.
Copy linkWhat happens at a maintenance appointment?
Maintenance generally involves releasing the system, cleaning the base and scalp, inspecting the skin and system, and reattaching it. Haircutting, blending and other services depend on your booking or membership inclusions.
Copy linkCan I maintain it myself?
Some wearers learn home maintenance; others prefer studio care. Full removal and rebonding require suitable products and a technique matched to your base. Start only after practical instruction. Online guidance supports that training and does not replace it.
Copy linkWhat if the front lifts between appointments?
A small edge lift is manageable and can be fixed with a touch-up glue Tuffs stylists show you how to apply, but movement across the system needs assessment. Do not add household glue or layer fresh adhesive over dirty, damp or irritated skin.
Copy linkWill it smell or make my scalp itchy?
Good hygiene and timely maintenance matter. Persistent odour, itching or discomfort should be checked rather than covered with fragrance or more adhesive. Although extremely rare, a sore, inflamed or weeping scalp needs prompt attention and may require medical advice. Initial itchiness can be present in 50% of wearers as the scalp adapts to something new being adhered to it, but it's of no concern or detriment to the skin itself, and gentle itching is fine, as if it's your real hair. That sensation will fade over a few days.
Copy linkHow long does a hair system last?
System lifespan and attachment wear time are different things. A system may be cleaned and refitted several times before replacement is needed. Its useful life depends on the construction, hair processing, care, friction, styling and exposure to sun, salt and chlorine. We will explain the expected replacement range for the option you choose.
Copy linkHow will I know it needs replacing?
Thinning density, persistent tangling, colour change, base damage or a hairline that no longer looks its best can be signs. We assess the whole system and discuss replacement before wear becomes difficult to manage.
Copy linkCan I stop wearing one later?
Yes. A bonded system can be professionally released and removed. Any hair clipped for attachment will need time to grow back, and underlying hair loss may have continued while you were wearing it.
